Artist Statement:

Hickey’s series of female idols are inspired by images of women from a variety of contexts, histories and worlds. The complex layering of imagery and patterns depict beauty, spiritual iconography and the feminine.

Recently her work has been exploring the idea of the body as a Tabernacle, meaning a “residence” or “dwelling place” for a divine presence. ‘Pregnancy’ refers to an inner self or soul that coexists with the physical.

Peter Kozak - Major Prize Winner - Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing 2012

MAJOR PRIZE WINNER

Artist: Peter Kozak

Title of the work: Absorb

Medium: Pencil on paper

Date of completion: 1/11/2011

Height (cm): 84

Width (cm): 59.5

Not for sale: Acquired

Artist Statement:

This work is part of a series of drawings focusing on the effects of long-term illness on the body.

I chose to approach the subject of illness through a series of pencil drawings, drawn from fragments of woollen garments in a state of stress and decay. For me, these fragments of wool are an effective metaphor for the body, with their damage representing the body’s susceptibility to violent change.

Alex Louisa - Honourable Mention - Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing 2012

HONOURABLE MENTION

Artist: Alex Louisa

Title of the work: Still

Medium: Charcoal and chalk pastel on paper

Date of completion: September 2011

Height (cm): 88

Width (cm): 66

Sale price $: 1800

Statement:

A tribute to a tiny feathered friend, found on a walk through our garden. Beautiful even when still.

I tried some new mediums in this artwork – charcoal pencils and Pan Pastels – and fell instantly in love. The Pan Pastels meant I could add broader areas of colour, like I was painting with a brush, while the charcoal pencils allowed me to get obsessive over tiny details.
